Ontario Welcomes Niagara Launch of Largest Renewable Natural Gas Plant in Province

Niagara Falls – The Niagara Resource Management Campus of Walker Industries is now home to the largest renewable natural gas facility in the province, an innovative project that is transforming landfill waste into clean, affordable energy.

In the final stages of commissioning, the Niagara Renewable Natural Gas Facility, a partnership between Walker Industries, Comcor Environmental and Enbridge, is expected to generate enough power to heat 8,750 homes every year while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 48,000 tonnes. Through a dedicated pipeline, the facility is also powering the nearby GM St. Catharines Propulsion Plant, making it one of the greenest propulsion plants globally.

Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West, joined Hon. Todd Smith, Minister of Energy, and Hon. Andrea Khanjin, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, along with representatives from Walker Industries, Comcor Environmental and Enbridge in Niagara Falls today for a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the launch of the new $42 million facility.

“I want to congratulate Walker Industries, Comcor Environmental and Enbridge for coming together to make this innovative renewable natural gas project possible,” said MPP Oosterhoff.

“Our government knows the private sector has the capital, capability and know-how to transform clean technology markets across Canada and we will continue to work closely with Ontario’s energy sector to find more ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions efficiently and affordably.”

“This project is a Made-in-Ontario solution to reducing and converting landfill waste into affordable and reliable low-carbon energy,” said Minister Smith.

“This is a great example of how we are using innovative solutions to diversify Ontario’s energy mix and support our energy transition, while fueling economic growth and building a cleaner, sustainable future for all Ontarians.”

“The collaboration between Walker Industries, Comcor Environmental and Enbridge is a great example of partners working together to seize the economic opportunity of turning landfill gas from waste into a valuable resource,” said Minister Khanjin.

“This project demonstrates how innovative solutions can drive positive change that creates jobs in Ontario, improves energy reliability and reduces greenhouse gas emissions for both our environment and future generations.”

“This project represents our commitment to innovation and sustainability,” said Geordie Walker, President and CEO of Walker Industries.

“For the past twenty years, we have been harnessing landfill gas into energy and we are excited to provide a consistent source of clean natural gas that can heat homes and support industrial activity for many years to come.”

Encouraging investments and innovative clean, renewable energy programs are part of the Ontario government’s Made-in-Ontario Environment Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help Canada meet its 2030 target.
