Niagara Falls – As part of the province’s unprecedented investments in regional transit, the Ontario government is investing $1.46 million in upgrades at the Niagara Falls Train Station. A critical milestone for the historic rail terminal, an unveiling today showcased the new station upgrades, which were funded through the Public Transit Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The first phase of upgrades was supported by $2.8 million in total funding in a partnership between the Ontario government, federal government, Regional Municipality of Niagara and City of Niagara Falls.
“As an international gateway for visitors and important transit hub for local commuters, today’s unveiling marks a historic milestone for the Niagara Falls Train Station,” said Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West.
“Our government will continue to protect Ontario with public transit investments that support economic growth and our growing population in Niagara.”
“This newly renovated station is an important investment in the infrastructure needed to unlock improved GO Transit connectivity to our region,” said Pat Chiocchio, Acting Chair of the Regional Municipality of Niagara.
“Niagara is a gateway to the Greater Toronto Area, and we are building a modern, integrated transportation network that is serving the evolving needs of our growing population and connecting the rest of Ontario with the many economic and tourism opportunities that Niagara has to offer.”
“This historic landmark will be transformed into a modern gateway to the connected, vibrant community of Niagara Falls,” said Jim Diodati, Mayor of the City of Niagara Falls.
“We see this station as a future hub of activity with the revitalization making it more welcoming and accessible to the more than one million people per year who will use it.”
The newly renovated station will enhance customer experience, improve connectivity and prepare the region for future growth in ridership. Upgrades at the station, which services as a transit hub for GO Transit, VIA Rail and WEGO riders, include a redesigned interior space with modernized washrooms, updated waiting area and digital transit displays, improved heritage conservation efforts, enhanced entry and exit configurations and the creation of driver amenities, tourism kiosks and potential tenant space for organizations like the Niagara Parks Commission.
“Our government is protecting Ontario by investing $70 billion to build public transit across the province, including here in Niagara Falls,” said Hon. Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation.
“The newly renovated Niagara Falls Train Station will connect people to good-paying jobs, housing and the region’s world-class attractions, growing our economy in the face of economic uncertainty.”
Alongside new roads and highways, public transit projects are vital to protecting the province’s economy and connecting more people to jobs and housing. The Ontario government is currently leading the largest expansion of public transit in North America.
