Smithville – The Ontario government is investing $3,969,375 in a critical sewer and watermain project to help build up to 2,100 new homes in West Lincoln. The funding is being delivered through the second intake of the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund, which includes a total of $325 million to help municipalities build, repair, rehabilitate and expand drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure across Ontario.

“Our government is giving local municipalities the tools they need to build more homes faster and tackle the affordability crisis that is pricing too many people, especially young families and newcomers, out of the dream of homeownership,” said Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West.

“In partnership with municipalities, Ontario will continue working hard to unlock housing opportunities and support growing communities, including the Regional Road 20 Reconstruction Project in West Lincoln.”

The Township of West Lincoln will use the funding to rehabilitate critical water infrastructure in Smithville, increase housing supply and supporting local economic growth.

“The affordability of the appropriate water and wastewater infrastructure that would allow for housing starts has been extremely problematic for a small rural municipality such as West Lincoln,” said Cheryl Ganann, Mayor of the Township of West. Lincoln.

“The success of this grant opportunity provided through the province’s Housing–Enabling Water Systems Fund is vitally important to the future of West Lincoln. We are most appreciative of this provincial funding, and additionally the support that we regularly receive from our local MPP, Sam Oosterhoff.”

“Having a strong infrastructure foundation with connections to water systems is the first step in delivering the housing Ontario needs,” said Hon. Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure.

“Our government is making targeted investments through the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund to safeguard growing communities and ensure families and residents have access to safe and reliable water services.”

Through the second intake of the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund, the government is supporting twenty-three water infrastructure projects across the province. In total, Ontario is investing nearly $1.3 billion, through the first and second intakes of the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund, to support seventy-seve water infrastructure projects that will help municipalities build approximately 600,000 new homes.

In Niagara, the province announced $22,293,037 in funding through the first intake of the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund in September for a critical water infrastructure project in Lincoln, and $20,407,059 in funding in October for a housing-enabling project in Welland.

Through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program and the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund, Ontario is providing nearly $2 billion to support housing- and community-enabling infrastructure and build more homes across the province.
