Welland – As part of its plan to protect Ontario and strengthen public services through the Fall Economic Statement, the Ontario government is supporting critical infrastructure upgrades at the Welland Hospital to connect people to improved patient care and the services they need.

“This critical planning grant for the Welland Hospital Redevelopment Project is a testament to our government’s historic increase in funding for health-care in Niagara,” said Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West

“From building two new hospitals – including both the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Grimsby and South Niagara Hospital in Niagara Falls – to now initiating the work on a third hospital in Welland, as well as training more local nurses and health-care workers and connecting more people to primary care, our province is on a mission to ensure every patient and family in Niagara receives world-class care when and where they need it.”

“Our government is proud to support Niagara Health as it plans for the next generation of hospital care in Welland,” said Hon. Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health.

“This investment builds on the province’s major commitment to the new South Niagara Hospital and is another example of our dedication to improving hospital care and access for Ontarians. Together, these projects will ensure residents in Niagara continue to have access to the high-quality care they need, in hospitals equipped to meet the demands of a growing and aging population.”

Through this investment, Niagara Health will renovate and build additional capacity at the Welland Hospital creating a safer, more comfortable space for people and their families to connect to the care and services they need.

“This announcement is an important milestone in our journey to transform care across Niagara,” said Lynn Guerriero, President and Chief Executive Officer of Niagara Health.

“The Welland Hospital plays a vital role in our three-site model, and this investment from the province signals strong confidence in that vision. It ensures Welland will continue to provide high-quality, accessible care for years to come, while supporting a seamless system across all our sites.”

Once complete, the upgraded hospital will include access control security upgrades, improved heating and cooling infrastructure and the reduction of triple and quad rooms to single and double occupancy rooms to align with current health-care best practices.

This project builds on the government’s $3.6 billion investment for a new South Niagara Hospital, which, once complete in 2028, will add more hospital beds and bring together acute care services, improve access to high-quality health care and make it easier for patients to receive the care they need closer to home. Once the new South Niagara Hospital opens, Niagara Health will be operating three hospital sites, including St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Welland.

As a next step, the Ministry of Health is working with Niagara Health to complete planning for this project, including determining final square footage. Once detailed planning is complete and the project is tendered and awarded, a construction schedule will be confirmed.

Through Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care, the Ontario government is expanding and modernizing Ontario’s hospitals, making it faster and easier for people of all ages to connect to the high-quality care they need, where and when they need it.
