May 29, 2026

Thorold – Supported by a $3.5 million investment from the Ontario government, Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West, is welcoming the launch today of the Clean Agriculture for Sustainable Production Project at Brock University. This funding was part of a province-wide $92 million investment delivered in 2024 through the Ontario Research Fund, which supports ground-breaking research that will advance knowledge, drive innovation and create a better future for the people of Ontario.

“The Clean Agriculture for Sustainable Production Project at the Norris W. Walker Research Farm of Brock University will not only support local growers and farm families in Niagara, but drive economic growth for the entire region,” said Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West.

“By leveraging cutting-edge research and industry expertise, we will create a stronger, more resilient agricultural sector that will help protect Ontario jobs today, and into the future.”

The Norris W. Walker Research Farm, located just South of the main campus of Brock University in Thorold, will allow researchers to expand the university’s existing Clean Plant Program which is critical to supporting Ontario’s grape and wine industry. The research farm will foster the development of more resilient grape varieties and innovative technologies to improve efficiency, including energy-smart greenhouses, early warning systems for growers and artificial intelligence-driven solutions.

“When we invest in research, we invest in our province’s future,” said Hon. Nolan Quinn, Minister of Colleges and Universities.

“These critical investments will ensure Ontario’s researchers can continue making discoveries that drive key sectors, create more well-paying jobs, and improve the lives of all Ontarians.”

Working alongside the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Canadian Grapevine Certification Network, Brock University is one of only two facilities in Canada approved to test and produce certified virus-free grapevines.

“The Clean Agriculture for Sustainable Production Project demonstrates Brock’s commitment to shaping tomorrow through research, discovery and knowledge,” said Dr. Lesley Rigg, President and Vice-Chancellor of Brock University.

“This initiative reflects the kind of applied, community-connected research that creates real-world impact while strengthening partnerships across sectors.”

Investments in research and development are vital for advancing Ontario’s position at the forefront of innovation. Through the Ontario Research Fund, the Ontario government is ensuring that the social and economic opportunities that result from discoveries made in Ontario benefit the province for years to come.
