MPP Oosterhoff Participates in Seniors Active Living Fair in Pelham
October 23, 2023
Fonthill – Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West, joined Marvin Junkin, Mayor of the Town of Pelham, along with local councillors and town staff, as well as a number of older adults and community volunteers, attending a Seniors Active Living Fair held at the Meridian Community Centre in Fonthill this past Friday.
Supported by the Government of Ontario, the event was hosted by the Older Adult Centres’ Association of Ontario and Town of Pelham and helps seniors by:
- Reducing social isolation and support seniors’ mental health,
- Promoting active and healthy living,
- Offering social engagement opportunities for seniors and caregivers.
Ontario is investing up to $247,000 in 2023-24 to fund Seniors Active Living Fairs in communities across the province in partnership with the Older Adult Centres’ Association of Ontario.
“Seniors living in Niagara want to feel a sense of belonging to the community and take part in all it has to offer,” said MPP Oosterhoff.
“Seniors Active Living Fairs offer that, while offering tips on the benefits of healthy aging.”
At a booth at the fair, staff from the constituency office of MPP Oosterhoff provided information to local seniors, including provincial power of attorney kits, application forms for various programs and grants supported by the Ministry of Seniors and Accessibility, and copies of the publication, Guide to Programs and Services for Seniors in Ontario.
“These fairs are an important way to raise awareness about programs, services and information available to seniors across Ontario,” said Hon. Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility.
“Additionally, they are a wonderful opportunity to learn new skills, enjoy leisure activities and help stay engaged to lead happier, healthier and more connected lives.”
“Our association is pleased to work with the Government of Ontario as our funding partner for Seniors Active Living Fairs,” said Sue Hesjedahl, Executive Director of the Older Adult Centres’ Association of Ontario.
“These fairs engage local older adults, volunteers, community members and community stakeholders from all across Ontario, including organizations from diverse, rural, northern, Francophone and Indigenous communities.”
Seniors Active Living Fairs are just one of many ways the Ontario government is helping local seniors stay independent, active and socially connected.
